Dentistry for kids

Gone are the days when a visit to the dentist filled the minds of our young patients with visions of horror and pain! Children coming to our practice are treated by two female colleagues who have undergone special training in child dentistry and can apply the latest scientific approaches in helping young patients. We feel that this is very important, because on both the biological and psychological level, treating young patients often requires a somewhat different approach than is used with grown-ups. Children who experience visits to the dentist in a positive way are most likely to retain this mental attitude into their adult lives. This provides the basis for life-long oral health with healthy and attractive-looking teeth.

At the first appointment, we take the trouble to familiarize young patients with the treatment room and explain all the dental equipment in a relaxed approach. Normally such first appointments (unless there are problems of acute pain) are planned to involve a check-up so that young patients experience no stress.

To protect kids’ eyes from the glare of our examination lamp (the dentist’s “sun”), we offer them coloured sunglasses to wear. While being treated, for example, having fillings, young patients can be entertained by watching movies on the large screens mounted above the treatment chairs. We also encourage parents to stay with their children while they are in the treatment room, and the dentist will advise if this is desirable or necessary according to the treatment given. On leaving the chair, children are allowed to select a present from our gift box. Should it be necessary to wait before being called in, the children can keep themselves amused with the toys and books available in our waiting room.

All these ideas are aimed to assuage any anxiety that children may be feeling and encourage them to build up a feeling of confidence in their dentist.

To awaken the interest of kids in dental hygiene, we regularly organize visits from nursery schools to our practice. This gives us the opportunity to let them know everything about oral health, tooth care, and good nutrition. This visits are supervised by our female colleagues and „Karius and Baktus“, two special friends.
